James is a PhD student in the Cambridge Machine Learning group, focusing on the intersection of probabilistic machine learning and deep learning. He is supervised by José Miguel Hernández-Lobato and advised by Carl Edward Rasmussen. He is funded by the EPSRC and the Michael E. Fisher Studentship in Machine Learning.

Before the PhD, he received an MPhil in Advanced Computer Science from Cambridge Computer Laboratory under Zoubin Ghahramani and Christian Steinruecken. Before that a BSc in electrical and information engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand.
